One of Falkirk Victoria Harriers’ newest members is proving age is just a number and that you are never too old to take up a new hobby

Robert Donachie, 77, joined the morning endurance running group at the Grangemouth Stadium-based club along with daughter Sharon McPhee earlier this summer and took part in his first ever race last weekend.

Seven runners from the endurance group, coached by Grant Matheson, took part in the 3k on the Green in Glasgow last Friday and Donachie proved to be a strong competitor, completing his first ever race in an impressive 13:54.

Daughter Sharon finished just in front of her dad in 13.03. Sharon is an assistant coach with the club and is used to spectating at races, supporting son Harry and daughter Mel.

Harry (U20) has many championship medals to his name and Mel (U15) is showing a lot of promise. Perhaps mum and grandad were inspired by the younger generation.

Club legend Fiona Matheson was the first Vics athlete to finish the race, crossing the line in 10.50 with husband Grant following just behind in 10.54.

Derek Esson was next in 12.54 then Sharon in 13.03. Karen McAllister gained a new personal best after knocking six seconds off her previous best time, finishing in 13.19 and Helena Gribben crossed the line 13.32 and Robert completed the Falkirk Vics’ line-up in 13.54.

Save the Date – CLUB CHAMPS

14/09/2024

Entry details to follow.

In order for our annual club championships to run smoothly we are looking for a number of parent helpers. We will have lots of easy tasks that can be learned on the day but please drop me a message if you need more info and if you’re willing to help.

There are six marathons in the World Marathon Majors. London, New York, Chicago, Boston, Berlin and Tokyo. After this years Tokyo marathon, ran in March, only 12,278 people worldwide had completed all six, and only 1,449 from the UK. Only an amazing 44 British men over the age of 65 have completed this mammoth journey and now Falkirk has the 45th!

Last April we reported that Falkirk Victoria Harrier stalwart Peter Thomson had completed Boston and London Marathons within 6 days of each other, a remarkable achievement in itself, to get to a total of five of the six marathon majors underhis belt. We can now report that Peter has completed all sixsince finishing the job in Tokyo.

Peter can be seen pretty much every day out running the streets and parks of Falkirk and is a regular at Falkirk Vics 10am Tuesday and Thursday training sessions, and his dedication has paid of.

When you complete all six you receive the coveted six star medal, a rare sight indeed. On receiving his Peter admitted to being a little overwhelmed by the experience and was quick to thank his training group for their support and encouragement.

After his Japanese adventure Peter and his wife Janice continued their travels to Australia to meet up with family. Now safely back at home Peter is looking forward to racing much more locally, having taken part in Falkirk Vics annual 10k, Round the Houses, which took place on Sunday 14thApril. He’s not keeping to the shorter races for long, however. Peter is also one of only 14 runners who have completed all 19 Edinburgh Marathons and is running this year’s event in May. Amazingly of these 14 runners 2 are members of Falkirk Vics. As well as Peter the other ever present at the Edinburgh Marathon is Jim Maclaren. It’s great to see a club like Falkirk Vics, with the tradition of road running going back over 120 years continue to provide conditions for such remarkable runners to thrive.

National Relay Champs

Falkirk vics were heavily represented today in Glasgow at the National Relay Champs in Scotstoun Stadium with teams across the age ranges!

The chat I heard amongst the young athletes was full of enthusiasm and excitement for the first ever medley relay.

Our u13 boys Kostas, Ben, Callan & Thomas were first to pick up a medal with 2nd place in the 200/600/200/600 relay. They were followed by the senior men Ben, Scott & Kane in the 3x800m relay.
